Anxiety & Stress Therapy

How does therapy address stress and anxiety?

The biggest, easiest answer is that we are going to talk. We’re going to talk about the stress, the anxiety, the cause of it, and how to handle it. I know, I know, you are thinking but I talk to my friends and family. Absolutely and I will continue to encourage that because support is needed for everyone. There’s a difference between talking to a loved one and talking to a counselor for multiple reasons.

1.   We’re unbiased partners in the conversation. We will listen to you, like genuinely listen to you and then help you with where you are at.

2.   We are specially trained to help you understand yourself and the problems you are facing.

3.   We are going to bring a different perspective and approach to the problem.

4.   We have experience working with many different people, many different techniques, many different scenarios, and many different coping skills and you get the benefit of getting what will work for you.

5.   We keep confidentiality.

6.   You know what to expect from therapy and can trust the process.

Anxiety, especially, can be difficult to change and heal from without professional help. This is the good news and bad news. Yes, you need more support, but it also means that there is hope that things can get better. It doesn’t feel like it right now. You are overwhelmed, emotional, and struggling but just trust me on this one. I’ve seen it happen. In fact, I’ve worked through a lot of my anxiety with support in the past. It is of course an ongoing work in progress, but we all are. If I can do it, and so many of my clients do it, you can do it.

Are you feeling…

           Restless?

           Rapid heartbeat?

           Lack of motivation?

           Irritable?

           Tension or headaches?

And the list could go on and on.

You answered yes to most of these, if not all of them. These are your thoughts. I just described your everyday life. And that is exactly how your body feels. Well, you are at least stressed and overwhelmed. Maybe there’s anxiety as well. Most of us, right now, are feeling similarly. There’s a lot going on and a lot of expectations. You aren’t alone but that also doesn’t mean that you have to just deal with it. Things can get better and that’s what brought you here.

My clients face everyday stress that feels overwhelming and unbearable. They deal with symptoms such as overthinking, constant worry, fearful of situations, loss of motivation, needing control, and just generally feeling overwhelmed. As life changes so does our ability to cope and manage expectations. Sometimes the expectations or circumstances change so what we used to do doesn’t work anymore and we don’t know how to adjust it. That’s okay.

Sometimes it’s just stress, sometimes it’s anxiety that we don’t know we have, sometimes it’s anxiety that we didn’t know could show up that way. Or maybe you are a person that knows you have anxiety and needs support. You have been dealing with different levels of anxiety your entire life.

It’s okay if you’ve been to therapy before and now it’s time to return for a new approach or a refresher. Life can change and give us ups and downs that we must work through. The previous counselor could have gotten you to a better place back then and now you need some more support again. Maybe the previous approach was not the perfect fit for you, and you need more or different and that’s okay. Therapy isn’t a one size fits all. It often takes several calls or even a few different intakes to find the right person. Maybe you know what I mean because you have been looking through different websites and they just didn’t seem right. We can also get some quality help from one person and gain benefits from going to someone else later because it just brings a new approach that compliments your previous work. Either way, you don’t have to face this alone.

Counseling is for anyone that is willing to talk through their life and find better ways of being. You don’t need to have all the answers or know exactly what’s wrong. You don’t always have to have the correct words or be the best at explaining things. That’s my job. I’m here to help. I’m here to help you figure it out and we can do this together. I have clients that come to me and say, “I have a hard time explaining things” or “I can’t always find the correct words”. Guess what? Yes, therapy is about talking but it’s not about the perfect words.

You get to come as you are.

Every feeling. Every thought. Every confusion. Every misunderstanding. And every doubt. We go into sessions and work through it all together.
